Key Dates for Planning FLF Events
June 06
- 5 June 06 - Family Learning Week Planning Conference
- Decide who you are going to target and find out as much about this group as you can. Look at particularly disadvantaged groups such as those families living in deprived areas, fathers especially those separated from their families, or those who might need to brush up their literacy, language or numeracy skills.
- Start planning early before people start to go on their summer holidays. Take a look at our activity ideas
- Register your event now to take part in our free prize draw.
July 06

- Meet with local businesses or community groups to see how you can help each other to reach business objectives. Working in partnership is always a key success factor for FLW events.
- Decide on your budget and find out about funding opportunities by going to the National Family Learning Network Funding Directory at www.familylearningnetwork.org.uk
- Use local summer fetes as an opportunity to promote your FLW event or to find out what families would like to do.
- Contact local information, advice and guidance providers such as nexstep, Connexions or your local college or university. Ask them to come along to give out information on future learning opportunities.
- Join the national Family Learning Week media campaign – contact the PR team on
August 06
- Take a look at the FLW A-Z for off-the-shelf activities. There are specific activities available to enable you to embed literacy, language and numeracy into your events.
- Order your branded goodies and ‘guide to family fun’ to give out to families.
- W/c 28 August 06 - Last chance to register your event to take part in the free prize draw.
- Order your free learndirect materials to give out at your event. They are available in 10 different community languages and will signpost adults to the free learndirect advice line or their website where they have masses of information about a wide range of courses of all levels. They are available from brandedmaterials@ufi.com
September 06
- With a month to go there is still time to organise a FLW event in your organisation. Take a look at our last minute activity ideas on the website.
- Think about how you will evaluate your event. Make surt e that the process you use is suitable for you target audience. Take a look at the ideas in the Planning Guide. We will also send you a preview copy of our evaluation which enables us to secure funding to continue to support your work.
- Don’t forget to tell us what you are doing so we can help you to promote your event. Details are logged on our web database and accessed by learndirect advisors for when the general public call
- Carry out a risk assessment of the venue where you will be holding your event. Make sure it’s accessible to disabled visitors or families with very small children who may have buggies and prams.
- If you plan to take photographs download a permission form off our website especially when children are involved.
- Contact local media and send them a press release. Book a photographer for your event if they are interested in coming along. If you would like help with local media contact the PR team on
October 06
- 6 –14 October – National Family Learning Week - it’s finally here!
- Don’t forget to decorate your venue and make it look inviting. Ensure staff who are helping out know what is going on throughout the whole event and can direct people to different activities.
- Don’t forget to complete the Campaign for Learning’s FLW Evaluation Survey. If you don’t receive one through the post take a look online.
November 06
30 November – evaluation surveys to be returned (even if you didn’t manage to organise something this year please let us know why).
